Unlike traditional monuments made in bronze and granite, Ledelle Moe's colossal concrete heads and figures unexpectedly articulate the fragility of her subjects-- as well as that of life itself. Scarred, precarious and pieced together from many small parts, these large-scale sculptures portray the vulnerability of individuals, while the artist’s constellations of miniature portrait heads express the power of the collective.
This catalogue documents an important survey of Moe's works organized by MASS MoCA, which includes monumental commissions made for the exhibition and sculptures, models, and works on paper made over the last decade. Along with stunning photography which shows how the exhibition changes dramatically from day to night, the publication includes essays by MASS MoCA Senior Curator Susan Cross; Virginia MacKenny, artist and Associate Professor of Painting, University of Cape Town; and Lize van Robbroeck, Professor of Visual Studies, Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
